The heating unit in Julie’s sleeping bag ran down around 3am, and she shivered until rising at dawn to stoke the fire. It had stopped raining, and Knocks was already there, warming his hands. He smiled at her. With a stunner on her belt, it looked less like a leer.

“Hope I didn’t wake you,” he said.

“I get up early.”

He nodded. “Shoe and I talked about your problem. We can give you and your partner a ride to our next park. Maybe you can get some help there.”

“I’ll check in with Ranger about that,” Julie said. “Thanks for the offer.”

Ranger was back at the van wearing her leather coat. “You should probably take them up on it,” she said. “Pigs’ll do a flyby in about twelve hours. You’ll be in jail three hours after that.”

“You might be, too.”

Ranger’s laugh was choked. “I have so many illegal mods in the van, that’s a definite.”

“They might go easier on you if you aren’t traveling with a runaway.”

“Pigs pick me up, I lose the van. Doesn’t matter what they charge me with after that. Juniper’s gone, I’m done.”

“I guess I’ll stay, then.” Julie checked the power level on her stunner. “I can get a flash charge for the drones off Shoe and Knocks.”

Ranger adjusted her coat. “I’m not planning on going down in a blaze of glory or anything.”

“Never hurts to be prepared.”
